Inertial Motion Tracking Baseball System

As part of a prototype development project for a wireless inertial sensor tracking system for baseball pitching and hitting, I was responsible for the following tasks:

  • Participated in development of a 3D inertial motion tracking measurement and player characterization system designed for recording, measuring, and analyzing baseball hitting and pitching mechanics.  Responsible for researching and providing technical specs on angular rate sensors and accelerometers.
  • In conjunction with the inertial sensor prototype phase, developed a 6 DOF pose estimation algorithm for both position and orientation using an extended Kalman filter to fuse the inertial measurements.
  • Utilized an optical motion tracking system and a MEMS based inertial sensor prototype to verify measurements between the motion tracking systems for player and bat rotations and angular velocities for both pitching and hitting mechanics.
