Inertial Motion Tracking Baseball System

As part of a prototype development project for a wireless inertial sensor tracking system for baseball pitching and hitting, I was responsible for the following tasks:

  • Participated in development of a 3D inertial motion tracking measurement and player characterization system designed for recording, measuring, and analyzing baseball hitting and pitching mechanics. ¬†Responsible for researching and providing technical specs on angular rate sensors and accelerometers.
  • In conjunction with the inertial sensor prototype phase, developed a 6 DOF pose estimation algorithm for both position and orientation using an extended Kalman filter to fuse the inertial measurements.
  • Utilized an optical motion tracking system and a MEMS based inertial sensor prototype to verify measurements between the motion tracking systems for player and bat rotations and angular velocities for both pitching and hitting mechanics.
