Baseball Research and Analysis

Following are highlights from some baseball biomechanics studies that I have performed:

  • Developed a 3D visualization model for the baseball swing and baseball pitching mechanics using motion tracking data imported into Poser. The 3D animation models were used for demonstration of the elite movement patterns utilized by players from any camera angle and was compared to 2D video images from high speed video to demonstrate individual performance analysis training capabilities.
  • Developed a full body forward dynamics model in LifeMOD from collected motion capture data for baseball pitching that incorporated dynamic joint torque visualizations to demonstrate potential inefficiencies in the player’s pitching mechanics and increased risk for injury to the elbow and shoulder joints.
  • Developed a full body forward dynamics model in LifeMOD from collected motion capture data for baseball hitting that incorporated dynamic joint torque visualizations to demonstrate power flow in the player’s hitting mechanics to demonstrate the efficiency of the Kinetic Link.
  • Utilized high speed video based camera systems, motion capture system technologies, and inertial sensor prototypes for measuring player and/or bat motions for baseball hitting mechanics and pitching mechanics studies for performance analysis and training.
  • Over 5 years of experience providing individual lessons in biomechanics-based pitching and rotational hitting techniques utilizing the latest biomechanical technologies and techniques for optimized performance and injury reduction.
  • Demonstrated proof of concept design and development on an innovative constraint based training aid for teaching proper connectivity in the rotational baseball swing.  Design incorporated modularity in system components for independent drill work using either invidual components or whole system. Incorporated motion capture study to demonstrate increased speed and power in the swing after working with the proof of concept prototype.  Currently in advanced design phase to develop initial prototypes for research and testing.
